PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCE

This section is dedicated to the technical and scientific exploration of packaging.

It brings together content on materials, technologies, safety, quality, regulation, innovation and the challenges facing the value chain.

It includes two main areas:

  • Packaging Science — technical analyses, scientific studies, academic contributions and research that help explain the principles, materials and processes governing packaging.

  • Packaging Technology — in-depth insights into technologies, production processes, tools, applied solutions and innovations that are transforming how packaging is designed and manufactured.

The aim is to make the scientific and technological knowledge that drives contemporary and future packaging clear, accessible and authoritative.

Marco Scatto is a Macromolecular Scientist who developed his academic background between the University of Venice and the University of Pisa. He has many years of experience in technology transfer within the advanced manufacturing of plastics in sectors such as packaging, automotive, biomedical and aerospace. He has taken part in numerous national and European research projects, is the author of 29 scientific publications and co-author of 7 patents. His extensive experience in thermoplastic biopolymers for packaging has led him to collaborate with several brand owners and converting companies with the aim of developing new sustainable packaging solutions. He is currently involved in both scientific consultancy initiatives and teaching activities at the University of the Republic of San Marino, the University of Padua and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. He is also a lecturer for the Italian Packaging Institute and serves as Scientific Advisor.

Technological innovation in packaging is now an essential opportunity to meet the growing demands of the market. High-performance materials must deliver excellent functionality without compromising recyclability, while the increasing need for extended shelf life is driving the industry to develop solutions that preserve products and ensure their accessibility in distant markets.

Artificial intelligence and emerging digital technologies are revolutionizing packaging design and production, enhancing efficiency while reducing waste and environmental impact. Mastering these processes has become crucial for industry professionals.

The Packaging Technology section aims to provide an overview of the most advanced and enabling technologies in the sector, offering insights and analyses for those who want to understand ongoing transformations and seize new opportunities.
