Michigan State University was the first school to offer a specialized degree program in Packaging Science, beginning in 1952, and the first to create a dedicated school for the field.

Michigan State University today offers a Bachelor of Science in Packaging, a science-based program incorporating every aspect of packaging, from materials and processes through systems development and testing. Laboratories are an integral component in the majority of packaging undergraduate courses, providing students with hands-on experience. It also offers a Packaging Master of Science On-Campus Program which provides a broad education with specialized training in a specific area of study, ranging from distribution environment to quality preservation; from medical/pharmaceutical packaging to recycling; just to mention a few. Michigan State University also offers Doctor of Philosophy degree in Packaging providing a broad education with specialized training in a specific area of study. Furthermore, it is possible to follow an online Master of Science Degree Program, designed to meet the needs of packaging professionals involved in all aspects of the industry as well as those with a general technology background. There is considerable flexibility in designing your degree program to fit your interests. The time commitment for an online course averages 10 to 15 hours per week.
