SUSTAINABILITY AS ETHICS

Sustainability as Ethics

«An ethical approach is written in our DNA: a way of being that comes from the soul and from our history. It has nothing to do with what is convenient, but what is right.
It is probably due to the fact that SIT was founded and is still today managed by people that come from a large family background and who have always, therefore, experienced living in a community.
When a company is small in size it is obviously entirely the expression of the entrepreneur that created it; when it grows, however, it takes on another identity, albeit avoiding to move away from those initial values on which it was founded.
This is precisely what underpins SIT Group’s success and why, being a leader in the flexible packaging sector means, for us, first and foremost, taking the problem of environmental impact very seriously and being committed in a tangible way in this direction, without neglecting aspects related to social responsibility.

The search for what is right and beautiful

Our headquarters are in Faetano (San Marino), which is a small community, and hence it is easy to understand the reasons we dedicate attention and commitment to our employees and to the community. It is a participation policy that we have obviously extended also to our other sites in Pesaro, Stanghella (PD), and the company in which we have an equity interest, ACM in Crema.
We work with enthusiasm, carefully and expertly planning all the production phases and implementing ever-new services for our customers; in short, as we often say, we continue to make the machines “run” in spite of difficult circumstances.
This did not prevent us from engaging the Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra to create an enormous mural in the summer of 2022, of more than 1,300 m2, which covers the entire facade of the site and in which he retells the story of the Saint coming out of the sea and the Republic of San Marino;

and where, following an ancient tradition of paying homage to the patrons of a work, he portrayed the members of our family.
It is a gift to the company, certainly, but also to the community which now has a space with a path through greenery, equipped to freely enjoy moments in which art and nature dialogue with each other. Like my mother Simona Michelotti tells me, this is also an expression of a way of life, of conceiving life: “If you have two coins, with one you buy a loaf of bread, with the other a flower. The bread enables you to live, the flower gives you a reason to live”.

From the enterprise to the territory

For the same reasons, the sense of responsibility towards future generations leads us to offer concrete support to our employees in times of need, and a special protection for the more disadvantaged, as well as promoting at various levels the development of a more ethical economic culture.
It’s a question of social responsibility which exists regardless of whether you accept it or not.
We believe that this assumption of responsibility is important, because many families depend on SIT, not only those that work in it; the wealth we produce is redistributed, also in terms of opportunities, to all the members of the local community.

Reflecting on ethics, looking for a response to the moral and social problems caused by the large-scale transformations that scientific and technological research are producing in our society, leads us to go beyond the pure “rationality” of numbers, in order to tackle day-to-day work and long-term strategies in the light of a more complex and overall “human” reality.
Business choices also necessarily relate, therefore, to the heart, and are the result of the human respect and social responsibility intrinsic to our history and our way of being.

Being clear to be better

With regards to the ethics of packaging, we seek, within our sphere of competence, to inform users and consumers in a correct way.
In recent years we have experienced a veritable revolution in the world of packaging, driven by the events that have occurred, from the various emergencies we have continuously had to face (raw materials, energy, and others) and, above all, by the attitude and sensibility with which institutions and citizens look at the theme of sustainability and direct their choices accordingly.
For this reason, every change in progress, in particular the increase in the use of paper partially replacing plastic films, must, however, be correctly evaluated in accordance with the application for which it is intended, and seriously considered on the basis of the life-cycle assessment.
In short, the concept of sustainability cannot be at the mercy of the fashions and moods of the market, it should be treated with professionalism, competence and – also crucial in this case – ethics.

Furthermore, we are living in an era in which communication is fragmented, and the overabundance of simplistic and easy-to-transmit messages to consumers makes it more difficult to properly transmit information that relates to complex and also very scientific themes.
For our part, we are oriented towards providing customers with correct and transparent information on the choices we propose, obviously as far as the complete disclosure of the LCA data. In collaboration with partners in the supply chain, we experiment new solutions, often precisely with a view to greater sustainability, designing and working inside our Innovation Centre to improve product performances, the efficiency of the distribution cycle and the overall impact of a particular packaging.
In addition, we pay great attention to the food safety regulations in order to always be able to certify that the quality and specifications of our products fully comply with the applicable legislation in all the countries of the world».
